Experimental Technique 3

'Stone' Setting

This technique 'stone' setting was my solution to a problem I had on how to safely and securely hold some of my paper pieces I had created by paper manipulation. The 'stone' settings are my way of holding my paper and showing them off, I created my own unique 'paper' settings out of silver and copper. As well as my porcelain 'paper' settings.

The metal 'paper' setting I created. I used copper sheet as my base, flat silver wire (hammered to create texture) as the sides and square wire as the claws to secure the paper. The tools and equipment used are a flat headed hammer creating natural bark like texture, saws and files to shape and cut, scribe and steel rule to measure and solder to join the piece together.

The clay 'paper' settings intention was to be as another more organic approach to my metal 'paper' setting but turned out to be an aesthetically pleasing decorative sample element for my piece without the need for paper. The materials needed for this are the porcelain clay itself and the finishing (coloured) glaze. With tools and equipment being the kiln and some shaping tools for the clay.

Out of all of my experimental techniques I would say that this is the most unique because it was a solution to a problem instead of just another technique. This proved to be a perfect technique to develop and take further.

The suitability of this technique with my use of materials and inspiration will allow me to merge or show contrast between the organic, natural and man-made. I will hopefully get to use this technique in future pieces with this theme and concept. Perhaps to repeat in lost wax casting.
